The middle city

Formerly, Saverne had three parts: the upper city at the place of the old Roman city, around the actual parish church and up to the canal, the middle city between the upper city and the river Zorn, and the lower city, beyond the Zorn, towards the Lorraine region. In front of the upper city, towards Strasbourg, there was the "suburb" (faubourg in french), ie. the current St-Nicolas place and its surroundings.

We enter now the middle city, crossing the bridge over the Rhine-Marne canal, just below the Castle's Place, next to the canal lock.

This is the upper city, taken from the canal bridge. You recognize the Unicorn fountain, Castle's Place and the catholic church in the background.

The upper city

Here are two views, taken back to back. The first one shows the bridge over the canal, with the last tree of Canal Street on the left. The second one, after a 180° rotation, shows the lower part of Main Street.

The middle city includes three parts that are often represented on postcards:

Go and have a look on these districts before looking at the various monuments of the city.
