During a long time, Saverne has accommodated troops, first quartered in the Rohan Castle, then in the new barracks
built at the Dragoon's Place and in the slope of Otterswiller. During the German period, between 1871 and 1918,
it was the 99th Upper Rhine Infantry Regiment (Oberrheinischer Infanterie Regiment) that
was stationned in Saverne.
Here is a view of the main gate at the entrance of the Castle, and a Souvenir postcard of the 2nd Compagny which was quartered there.
After the liberation of 1918, the 10th Light Infantry Battalion (Bataillon de Chasseurs à Pied - BCP in french) took its place in 1920. The Castle returned to civilian activities only in 1940. Here is an other view of the guard and a Souvenir postcard of the 10th BCP. Notice that the sentry boxes now have other colors.
