Formerly, since 1845, there was a monument on Castle's Place: the obelisk. It was built in the year 1666
and was initially placed in the gardens of the episcopal castle.
On its four faces were graved the names of 148 towns in the world, followed by the distance between them and Saverne, expressed in german miles. A false manoeuvre of a US truck, just after the second world war, knocked the obelisk down. It was broken in thousands of pieces and it was impossible to raise it up again.
