After the lock, the canal turns right under the Paris Road Bridge, going into the river Zorn valley,
towards the numerous locks which will lead it through the Vosges mountains.
The great building in the background, over the barge, is a part of the old Recollet Monastery, today included in the General Leclerc High School. Notice in the left foreground the horses and the man who leads them. It's the harnessing which pulls the barge. The little electrical locomotives system hasn't been installed yet.
The view hereunder shows the canal at the exit of the city. On the right you can see the building and the cupola of the third synagogue of Saverne. Jews have been authorized to stay in town since 1669, by the bishop of Strasbourg, François-Egon de Furstenberg. They were confined in a ruined district of the middle city which was then called the Jews Court. A first synagogue was built there in 1779. A new one was then built in 1835 in the Old Synagogue Street (between Railway Station Street and Canal Quay). It will be burned out in 1850. This third synagogue has been built in 1898 and inaugurated on the 9th of March 1900. It still exists today.
At the exit of the city, on the left, we find the "Schiffsmatt", litterally translated "the ship's meadow". It was the repair shops for the barges. The view hereunder is taken in direction of the city.
This last view shows the canal in the river Zorn valley. This valley, along with the col of Saverne, is the only way to cross the North Vosges mountains. It's sometimes only a few tens meter wide. In this valley you will find side by side: the Rhine-Marne canal, the River Zorn, the road leading to Lutzelbourg, and the Paris-Strasbourg railway.
After this walk along the canal, let's go to the districts along the River Zorn.
