Among the early postcards that were printed in the german countries in the late 19th century,
you can find those famous "Gruss aus..." postcards ("Hello from ...") followed by the
name of the city or village. Those postcards, generally lithographies, with colors or only brown, present
several mini-views of the city or of its surroundings. Saverne, Zabern in german, has also
many of this kind of postcards. You will find some of them hereunder.
This kind of postcards has also been used to create a puzzle with the city of Saverne and its surroundings, made of four postcards. This first card is a lithography of the canal basin, overhanged from right to left by the Rohan Castle, the subprefecture (formerly episcopal Regency), and the former episcopal Chancellery. At the time where the picture was drawn, there is still a "hole" at the place of the actual trial court which will be built in 1899.

The following two postcards were edited by the same editor. They show how the mini-views were re-used from one postcard to another. On both cards you can see, left and right of the main view, a view of the church and a view of the Katz House, built against the wall of the town hall. The two views of the Haut-Barr (forester house and devil's bridge) can also be found on both cards. |
