Paris Road and
Mission of the Holy Spirit Fathers

The Paris Road begins in front of the house number 103 in Main Street. It leads to the foot of the col and then to Paris (almost 500km further on the RN4). It follows the plan of the old medieval ramparts around the city centre.

Along this road, at the foot of the old ramparts, a public square was created, named Square Latouche. Knight Latouche was one of the mayors of Saverne, in the 19th century.

Square Latouche

From the road and from the end of the square, you can admire the catholic presbytery and its tower. It is installed in an old town house from the Renaissance, built on the ramparts. In fact, there are three buildings, the eldest one is from the 16th century (1569). They formed the town house of the Wangen Family. They became presbytery in 1804.

Presbytery

In front of the presbytery, there's the Gottenhouse Street, were you can find the Mission of the Holy Spirit Fathers (St-Florent Mission).

As you go past, you can look at the work of those paviours. They are working just in front of the wall which encloses the Mission. You can see the windows of the church. The macadam wasn't invented yet, or it wasn't commonly used on the roads.
