Main Street

Main Street is still today the main street of the city. It's the street where most of the shops are located. It links the upper town to the middle one. In Main Street you can find the Town Hall and the Police office. It goes along Church's Place and Castle's Place. It crosses the Rhine-Marne canal near the lock and leads to Railway Station Street which leads itself to the Station and to the Post Office.

Here are two views of the upper part of the street, between Walls Street and Church's Place. The first house on the right, formerly Café Guillmot, has been totally transformed in 1910 and has now been replaced by a little commercial centre. A few years ago, it was hosting the Social Security Centre of Saverne.

Notice on this second view the german soldiers patrol. Everybody seems to look at them, first of all the children next to them.

Main Street 2

Next to the church, here is the Heyl house. Notice the curious renaissance style porche: it has the form of an ogee arch. This house was formed by three buildings that were joined side by side. It was pulled down in 1965 and replaced by a block of flats whithout any style.

In the foreground, the fountain of Church's Place, dated 1751. Renovated in 1824, it has a Unicorn sculpted in relief on the column. It still stands at the same place.

Heyl House

From Church's Place, Main Street plunges towards Castle's Place. On the left, after the Heyl house, is the old Fisch Drugstore. This pharmacy was created at the beginning of the 18th century. People from Saverne have frequented it at the same place from 1767 until 1972. In 1972, the buiding was renovated and the pharmacy moved in the house on the opposite side of the street.

Notice the attractiveness that a photograph could have at that time, when he installed his camera in the middle of the street.
