The river Zorn
(concluded)

The building on this view belongs to the Old Hospital. It was built in 1885-86. After the demolition of the main building, this one was used as a parking for a neighbouring hotel. It was pulled down in 1983. The last souvenir of this old hospital is the street along it which is still named the Old Hospital Sreet.

Abreast of the little dam on the preceding view, begins a little headrace which was used to bring the water to the municipal mill, located in town. This mill was built in the 15th century and pulled down in 1969. This little headrace was called the Mühlbach. Today, it is entirely filled.

In the background you can see the old orphanage (turret), today Social and Cultural Centre Louise Weiss, and the St Catherine Chapel (bell tower on the right), built in 1662 on the ruins of a previous chapel from the 13th century which was burned down in 1636. The St Catherine Chapel was pulled down in 1941.

The section of wall over the arch which crosses the Mühlbach is a relic of the old town ramparts.

At the exit of the city, at the beginning of Monswiller Street, you could see this public washhouse where the housewifes who did not live along the river could come to do their washing. It was a privileged place for gossiping. The arrival of running water into each one's house led to the desertification of this place. The housewifes won't complain about it, then they were doing a very hard work there, specially during winter time.

After this outlook on the districts along the river Zorn, lets go to the Railway Station and to the Post Office.
